We are pleased to announce that Canmore, Alberta artist Janice Tanton has been awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant for her project, “CAMP”.

This is the second Canada Council individual project grant Tanton has received from the Alberta Creative Development Initiative Fund. The project will run for one year, culminating in a final exhibition and interactive website engaging the public and featuring the new works in late February, 2012.

In 2008, Tanton received her first award from the Canada Council. It resulted in the creation of The Community Fusion Project, a successful community arts engagement process that creates relationships between diverse community members by communication only through the language of the arts. Community Fusion continues to touch many people, and has been used to help create new relationships across North America and internationally.

“CAMP” is a visual-arts project examining identity and contemporary nomadism through the eyes of indigenous, non-indigenous and new Canadians.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to produce this work and I see this project as a timely and significant challenge. Identity and temporary claims to space and resources are clearly linked to our relationships and sustainability as part of local, national and global communities. To examine these concepts artistically through a “camping” lens is a privilege, and I’m grateful to The Canada Council for the Arts for the opportunity.”
